The University of Western Australia Professional Development Award Winners 2018

Dr Peter Mark, Assistant Professor, School of Human Sciences

Peter is an Assistant Professor in the School of Human Sciences, where he coordinates 3 units and teaches a further 2 units, all whilst keeping an active research programme. Peter’s research investigates the development of circadian rhythms within the placenta and fetus and how disturbances in this rhythmic development, as well as other gestational insults can impact on adult health. Peter is on the Executive Committees of the Australian and New Zealand Placental Research Association (ANZPRA) and the International Federation of Placental Associations (IFPA) as well as an active member of the Society for the Development Origins of Health and Disease, the Society for Reproductive Biology and the Endocrine Society of Australia. Peter will be the award to travel to Tokyo, Japan in September 2018 to attend the International Federation of Placental Associations (IFPA) conference and the preceding Executive Committee meeting, where Peter will discuss Perth as a potential 2021 conference host destination.  

Vincent Wallace, Research Associate Professor, School of Physics, Computing and Mathematics

Vincent is a Research Associate Professor in the School of Physics, Computing and Mathematics, he holds the Youngberg Women’s Cancer Research Fellowship from the Cancer Council Western Australia and is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. Vincent’s research at UWA is focused on a number of areas: 1. Development of an intra-operative tool for use during breast cancer surgery to aid the surgeon to identify and excise all of the disease, in collaboration with Mount Hospital Perth and Guy’s Hospital London; 2. The effects that electromagnetic radiation has on cells and tissues, this not only addresses some safety concerns but will also have some beneficial outcomes like pain management, in collaboration with the Peron Institute, Perth and Caltech, USA. Vincent will use the Aspire funding to attend The International Society of Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves (IRMMW-THz) 2018 conference where he will present the Perth 2021 bid to the International Organising Committee.
